Augsburg Confession
Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560)
Presented to Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg in 1530, this confession of faith set forth the core convictions of the Lutheran Reformation in twenty-eight articles covering justification by faith, the church, the sacraments, and the correction of doctrinal abuses. Drafted by Philip Melanchthon with Luther's counsel, it remains the primary doctrinal standard of Lutheran Christianity. Its irenic tone and measured argument made it the defining statement of evangelical faith in the sixteenth century.
