A Godly Letter of Warning to the Faithful in London, Newcastle, and Berwick
John Knox (c. 1514-1572)
Written from exile in Dieppe as Mary I's Catholic restoration began, this urgent pastoral letter calls English Protestants to refuse all participation in the Mass, which Knox argues is outright idolatry that will draw down divine judgment. Knox draws extended parallels between England and Judah under Jeremiah: a people that received the light of God's Word and then apostatized courts a worse fate than one that never knew it. Among the most charged pastoral letters of the English Reformation, it established Knox's pattern of prophetic public address that would define his entire ministry.
